(article excerpt) Throughout history women have practiced body modification rituals that symbolize beauty, strength, and social standing within their community. In Canada, more and more women are discovering the empowering effects of body piercings, tattoos and henna art.Today women from all walks of life are looking to these ancient rituals as a means of personal expression which can signify a transition in their life. For instance, it is becoming popular for women after childbirth to pierce their navel as a way of reclaiming their body. Similarily, a young girl might get a navel piercing to celebrate her transition from childhood to adolescence. Henna is also popular as a temporary body art. Appearing on the skin as a red/brown "tattoo", henna lasts up to two weeks. Traditional designs include flowers, vines and intricate woven patterns. The art of tattoo is perhaps the most powerful form of body modification which can open a doorway to one's mind and emotions that is indelible. At Halo we believe that body art should not only accent the flow of your body and mind, but should be a fun and relaxing experience. |
