Indwelling cannula needles are specifically
designed for single-use. They come direct from
the manufacturer, pre-sterilized and individually packaged. Single time
use ensures needle sharpness and makes for a more painless procedure.
Other piercing methods often involve cheaper quality, re-worked hypodermic
needles which have microscopic barbs and are more prone to dulling.
Use of a piercing gun has similar problems as the jewelry used is not
sharp, thus causing greater tissue trauma. Indwelling
cannula needles are extremely sharp and glide through the tissue. When the
needle is removed, the cannula (a flexible plastic sheath) is left behind.
It conforms to the body and holds the piercing open for easier jewelry
insertion. As the jewelry is inserted, the cannula is removed
simultaneously. This method of piercing leaves a very neat
incision which results in faster, more comfortable healing
times.
